We’ve received a few calls for edible image cakes. I’ve seen those cakes for graduations and other accomplishments, where the picture of the person-of-the-hour is on the top of a sheet cake with a piped shell border on the sides. The images are made to adhere to the smooth buttercream in a way that you shouldn’t notice the edge of the paper image and the beginning of the buttercream. Well, our cakes are not decorated in buttercream and we don’t yet have an edible image printer. We had a fleeting thought about that with this cake to make the money: a Gucci duffel bag with a Gucci belt and money coming out of the bag and money on the cake board. We want all of the cool decorating tools eventually.
A lot of people at Benihana’s where it was delivered were quite impressed with the cake. I think part of it was that it’s hard not to look twice when you see money crumpled up and just hanging out, waiting for someone to just snatch it up. I was thinking about trying to paint the images of the bills, but I’m not really trying to get in the counterfeit market. I’d do some serious traveling with wads of extra cash, but I’m expecting to earn it.
So Amy found some chocolate bills at the local Cost Plus. After taking the chocolate out and crumpling the metal bills, they were just the right scale for the bag and crumpled up just like extra cash. Since we were working without breaks, it was a nice treat to have the chocolate, too.
I should thank the wonderful staff at Benihana’s for helping me find the client (ooops! just a little late in arriving for her cake). I know the hostesses and waiters were hoping I could just give them the cake if the client didn’t arrive, but then the birthday boy wouldn’t have a cake.
Happy Birthday Russell! It’s all yours!
