Giant Burrito Cake with Toppings and Tabasco Sauce

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Everyone always talks about the burrito as large as your head. But how can anyone but competitive eaters like our local Joey Chestnut really finish one?

Giant Burrito Cake with Toppings and Tabasco Sauce

How about this giant burrito cake that serves 50? It really was a burrito larger than your head. It was topped with cheese, diced tomatoes, lettuce and olives and served with Tabasco.

Joey Chestnut probably would have that finished in 20 minutes. And I couldn’t even watch it.

Thomas the Train 2nd Birthday Cake

I love the message that Marlo’s mom wanted for Thomas the Train: Choo Choo Marlo’s 2! This Thomas the Train was made to look like a big mylar balloon that was outside the party house welcoming everyone to Marlo’s birthday party.

Happy Birthday Marlo!

Sometimes I wonder how our clients know us so well. Though we love cats and dogs and all animals here, for years we cannot talk about our closest primate without screaming the name. So here we go… MONKEYS!!!

Just like the fact that you can never have just one, here’s a roundup of the varied monkey cakes we’ve made.

Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger 5th Birthday Cake

Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Sitting 5th Birthday Cake Nicholas

Nicholas celebrated his 5th birthday party at Danny the Dragon’s Picnic Place. Walking to the back of the park, we passed so many families with kids excited to see Buzz Lightyear and parents taking pictures. Many asked, “Is that a cake?” Yes, under the fondant was Devil’s Food cake with Vanilla Bean Buttercream.

It was so cute when after we place Buzz on the table, Nicholas was right at eye level to see his name on the sole of Buzz’s shoe (where Andy writes his name to claim his toys in the movie). Nicholas looked right to his friend to say “That’s my cake!” That’s right, Buzz came just for you Nicholas.

We’re still playing with the cool Flip that TLC gave us. Check out the cool laser light action on the cake.

Happy Birthday Space Ranger Nicholas!

Princess Tiana Birthday Cake

Friday, August 20th, 2010

There was so much excitement when Disney unveiled their newest princess in the movie “The Princess and the Frog”. Even though I’m not the girliest girl, I still wanted to see what kind of adventure Princess Tiana would have. It is a Disney movie after all, and they know how to tell a good story.

Princess Tiana Birthday Cake

Tammy sent us a photo of the beautiful princess for Khaliyah’s birthday and Amy made a spectacular cake. Tammy was so impressed with the pregnant belly cake she ordered for a baby shower that she couldn’t help hugging Amy. When I saw the cake I knew that Amy again earned a hug for this one, and a thrilled Tammy did just that. That’s not a requirement when you get your cake, but I could tell by Amy’s shy smile that she was pleased to make Tammy so happy.

Thank you Tammy for your great appreciation! And Happy Birthday Khaliyah!

Boom Box Wedding Cake

We knew we were delivering to a fun wedding when we arrived at the beautiful Clos la Chance Winery with a hot pink retro boom box. The young newlyweds love to dance and certainly show their zest for fun with this cake.

Congratulations Janine and Keith!

The Incredible Shrinking Man 40th Birthday Cake

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

The Incredible Shrinking Man 40th Birthday Cake

I was thrilled we made the cake for my good friend’s 40th birthday party. In Keen’s 39th year he dropped more than a third of his weight! I’ve been calling him “The Incredible Shrinking Man” and I’m probably not the only one because his wife decided that was the perfect design for his cake. He knows that he’s just like the commercials you’ve seen where the man says “I’m 40 and in the best shape of my life.” He has so much to be proud of and he was happy to tell everyone about his success story at his surprise party. He’s even lost a few pounds too many so he could enjoy all the great food that his family made and a slice of his cake–lemon cake with raspberry filling and lemon buttercream. After all of the dieting and faithful exercising, I’m glad he was able to cut loose and enjoy himself at his party.

Happy Birthday Keen! 40 years in and you look great!

Uncle Sam Celebration Cake

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Uncle Sam Celebration Cake - Happy 4th of July

Last week we were happy to present this Uncle Sam cake to “Miss Tracie”, an amazing teacher that just retired from Amazing Creations Preschool. You know she still loves this school since she was the top bidder at their Annual Fundraiser and Spaghetti Dinner, winning a custom cake from us! We had made a platter of Spaghetti and Meatballs Cake for the fundraiser before, but instead of tricking everyone with some spaghetti on the dessert table, this time we were happy that a donated auction cake helped Tracie give money back to the future of the school.

You may be more familiar with the rougher Uncle Sam from war photos with a pointed finger saying “I want you”. This cake was designed after a more nostalgic Uncle Sam sculpture by Jim Shore.

You know summer is here with the celebration of America’s Independence Day. Have a great summer!

Purell Hand Sanitizer, Cavapoo, iPhone Groom’s Cake

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Can you figure out who this cake describes? Single man from Stanford University likes dogs, cares for his personal hygiene, knows his figures, and uses the latest in communication technology. Sorry ladies, though that may describe your ideal man, that calendar app is for Saturday, June 26th when he said “I do” to Patty at the beautiful Pasadera Country Club in Monterey. He’s not single anymore! And his bride surprised him with this personalized groom’s cake.

The day after their wedding we received this sweet note:

Thanks for the cake! I love it and Eugene thought was such a fun and unique design! You did a great job, and the cake taste delicious!

I look forward to working with you more in the future!

Warm Regards,
Patty

Gucci Duffel Moneybag Birthday Cake

Monday, May 17th, 2010

We’ve received a few calls for edible image cakes. I’ve seen those cakes for graduations and other accomplishments, where the picture of the person-of-the-hour is on the top of a sheet cake with a piped shell border on the sides. The images are made to adhere to the smooth buttercream in a way that you shouldn’t notice the edge of the paper image and the beginning of the buttercream. Well, our cakes are not decorated in buttercream and we don’t yet have an edible image printer. We had a fleeting thought about that with this cake to make the money: a Gucci duffel bag with a Gucci belt and money coming out of the bag and money on the cake board. We want all of the cool decorating tools eventually.

Gucci Duffel Moneybag Birthday Cake

A lot of people at Benihana’s where it was delivered were quite impressed with the cake. I think part of it was that it’s hard not to look twice when you see money crumpled up and just hanging out, waiting for someone to just snatch it up. I was thinking about trying to paint the images of the bills, but I’m not really trying to get in the counterfeit market. I’d do some serious traveling with wads of extra cash, but I’m expecting to earn it.

So Amy found some chocolate bills at the local Cost Plus. After taking the chocolate out and crumpling the metal bills, they were just the right scale for the bag and crumpled up just like extra cash. Since we were working without breaks, it was a nice treat to have the chocolate, too.

I should thank the wonderful staff at Benihana’s for helping me find the client (ooops! just a little late in arriving for her cake). I know the hostesses and waiters were hoping I could just give them the cake if the client didn’t arrive, but then the birthday boy wouldn’t have a cake.

Happy Birthday Russell! It’s all yours!
